Melbourne, Mar 12 (ANI): Australian vice captain Michael Clarke runs the risk of following in spin legend Shane Warne’s footsteps and never captaining Australia at the Test level because of his “not-so-private life”, according to former opener Michael Slater.

Slater, the man who introduced Clarke to Lara Bingle, does not believe that “Pup” is fit to captain Australia if he continues to be bogged down in off-field drama.

He did not delve into the Bingle fiasco, but was adamant that Clarke needed to sort out his off-field dramas immediately.

“Michael Clarke cannot be captain of the Australia cricket side while his off-field life is generating the kind of headlines we have seen this week,” Slater wrote in his Wide World of Sports column.

“Never before has someone as important to the side as the vice-captain asked for – and been granted permission – to leave a tour to sort out relationship issues,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Slater, as saying.

“Clarke needs to get things right off the field, because he really doesn’t need the distraction when he is trying to do his best for Australia out in the middle,” he wrote.

Slater said nobody would have dared ask Allan Border, the captain on his first Ashes tour, to go home, and added that Ian Healy had to watch the birth of his first child via video.

However, pacer Nathan Bracken, who once left a ODI match against Sri Lanka in Perth to return to Sydney for family reasons, said Clarke’s shock return “was a tough decision, but a smart one”.

“And while we all know how much he loves his cricket, this decision to come home only shows how much Pup also understands family life,” said Bracken. (ANI)

Mumbai, Mar. 12 (ANI): The Indian Premier League (IPL) has become an emblem of India’s aspiration to be a recognised world power in all, if not, most spheres.

Mumbai, Mar. 12 (ANI): The Indian Premier League (IPL) has become an emblem of India’s aspiration to be a recognised world power in all, if not, most spheres.

In a country of 1.2 billion people, most of whom are bonkers about cricket, the IPL is a symbol of everything they want India to become — a true global power.

There is something about IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi that suggests a reservoir of pressurised energy waiting to bypass Indian cricket’s myopic administrators, the nepotism, corruption, vested interests, personal fiefdoms and incompetence.

America and China also beckon. All that is needed is the right salesman (him), the right product (the IPL) and a belief in the power of the market.

Modi’s mission is to make cricket enticing and accessible, and hence more lucrative.

In 2008 he introduced cheerleaders to the game, causing a storm among conservatives. This year, he forged a deal with Google and YouTube to show live IPL matches online.

“I see the IPL becoming bigger than the NFL, the NBA, the English Premier League,” he tells The Times with typical grandiloquence.

The idea for the IPL had been gestating ever since Modi was a student in the US, but the real impetus came when he had a cup of tea with a leading sports agent at Wimbledon in July 2007, by which time he was the vice-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the national governing body.

What followed testifies to his powers of organisation. By the time the first ball was bowled nine months later, the tournament had generated two billion dollars from the sale of television rights, team franchises and other licences.

In 2004, before Mr Modi battled his way on to the Indian cricket board, which owns the IPL, its annual income was probably less than 15 million dollars.

In the Modi era cricketers can earn — pro rata, at least — sums to rival those of their footballing peers.

Modi says that the IPL is about accruing audiences, not money. Test cricket is not in danger, because the Indian cricket authorities still make more out of Tests and international one-day games than they do out of the new league.

He does, however, believe that Test cricket must evolve. His vision is for a switch to games starting in the afternoon and continuing into the evening under floodlights.

Indeed, reviewing Modi’s successes so far, it is tempting to assume that the future of the IPL is assured. Certainly India’s standing as cricket’s financial superpower has been confirmed. (ANI)

Dubai, Mar.12 (ANI): The International Cricket Council (ICC) has reportedly rejected the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) application against the Indian Premier League (IPL) for snubbing Pakistani cricketers, saying it can not take action against any domestic association.

According to well-placed sources in the PCB, Haroon Lorgat, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the ICC has replied to PCB’s letter clarifying that the governing body cannot interfere in the issue.

“The ICC told the PCB that since the IPL was primarily a domestic tournament of the Indian cricket board, it couldn’t do anything,” The News quoted sources, as saying.

“The ICC also took the same stance as the IPL that the franchises which bid for the players were also private enterprises and the ICC had no control over them,” they added.

Eleven Pakistani players, including the cream of the Shahid Afridi-led reigning Twenty20 World Cup squad were in the IPL auction 3 fray, but none of the eight IPL franchisees took interest in them, fearing the chill in Indo-Pak relation might worsen, resulting in non-participation of these players. The uncertainty over their availability cost Pakistani players lucrative IPL contracts. (ANI)

United Nations, March 12 (IANS) India’s cricket superstar Sachin Tendulkar has been named a Goodwill Ambassador by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Tendulkar, the first player to score 10,000 runs in one-day internationals, will use his massive global popularity to raise awareness and harness support for environmental action in his home country of India and around the world, the UNEP announced here today.

“I have played and enjoyed my cricket across the planet. Now it’s also time to do something for the planet, which is our only home,” he said.

“Being part of the effort to save the planet is an immense undertaking but it is a challenge I am ready to undertake. Working with UNEP and cricket fans across the globe, I am in good company. Together we can do it.”

The agency’s Executive Director, Achim Steiner, voiced confidence that Tendulkar’s “character, personal integrity, intellect and profile will catalyze widespread environmental action.”

With 2010 being the UN’s International Year of Biodiversity, the cricket legend will work with the agency to boost the global and grassroots response to the loss of animal and plant diversity worldwide.

Tendulkar is no stranger to the work of the UN, having lent his voice to a UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) campaign in India on the importance of personal hygiene.

As one of his first duties as Goodwill Ambassador, he will lead a Green Pledge to save the planet when the Indian Premier League (IPL) kicks off its third season tomorrow night in Mumbai.

The vow to be made in front of the millions of fans expected to be watching live on television, YouTube or at DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai reads “the Earth is our home and together we must conserve our precious wildlife, forests and oceans. I am proud to pledge that I will play my part in caring for our natural heritage.”

Along with Tendulkar, team captains from the Deccan Chargers to the Kolkata Knight Riders will sign a giant globe made out of recycled materials.

Noting that as a rapidly developing economy, India’s consumption and production patterns could define the planet’s future, Steiner said: “We need to make the right choices in terms of how best to manage energy and natural resources.”

“To borrow a cricketing metaphor, these choices will define whether the world is running or soon will be run out.”

Ahmedabad, March 11 (IANS) The graduating batch of the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad has received placement offers from 110 firms, including international offers from firms like Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank.

The placement process for the graduating batch of the Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP)at the IIM-Ahmedabad, closed Thursday. All PGP students sitting for placements at IIM Ahmedabad have been placed in the firms of their choice, official sources said here Thursday.

“Despite a recessionary year, a larger batch, a new, untested placement process, all students of the batch were placed in the firms of their choice,” the spokesperson added.

“More than 40 offers extended by Global Strategy Consulting firms, Global Niche Consulting firms, Global Investment Banks and Global Private Equity firms, the four cohorts that constituted this cluster. Mckinsey & Co (8 acceptances including pre-placement offers), The Boston Consulting Group (8 acceptances including pre-placement offers), Monitor Group (5 acceptances), Bain and Company, Booz and Company, AT Kearney and Oliver Wyman went back satisfied with the quality of students recruited from IIM-A,” Mansi Chitalia, member student placement committee said.

“With 53 percent of the batch of the batch eligible, the thrust on lateral placements ensured that students could leverage their experience to the hilt. Firms like Deloitte Consulting, A&M, Yes Bank, TSMG, Cognizant, Aditya Birla Group, Amazon and Philips were some of the major recruiters during the process. More than 40 firms participated in the laterals process and extended more than 100 offers, an increase of 4 times over last

year,” she pointed out.

The year also marked the return of the Investment Banks for the Final Recruitment Process. As compared to last year that saw almost no presence of Investment Banks for final placements, this year saw I-Banks extending offers both through PPOs and final placements. “While Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, UBS, Deutsche Bank and Citigroup were among the major recruiters to extend offers through the PPO route, we saw JP Morgan,

Merrill Lynch, HSBC and Nomura participate in the finals process,” Chitalia added.

Similar to last year, this year also saw international offers being made to students of this institute. Goldman Sachs offered multiple roles in London while banks like Morgan Stanley, Citigroup and Deutsche Bank offered roles across Asia Pacific. In a marked development that probably is an indicator of conditions improving dramatically for IT firms, Cybage and Syntel Inc. made offers for their US operations. P&G, with 4 acceptances, continued with its trend of extending a majority of its offers for

Singapore operations.

Yes Bank (13 offers including laterals) and ICICI Bank (13 offers) were the top recruiters on campus this year.

This was closely followed by Deloitte that made 10 offers (including laterals) for its consulting arm serving the US offices. One of the top global consulting firms, the Boston Consulting Group and leading steel maker, Ispat Industries made 8 offers each for consulting and general management roles respectively.

The elite Tata Administrative Services and niche consulting firm, Feedback Ventures

re-affirmed their commitment to IIMA with 6 offers each. Public sector enterprises like Union Bank of India (2 offers), Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (4 offers) and National Thermal Power Corporation (1 offer) also participated in the process.

Banking and consulting firms were the flavors of the season this time around with most top recruiters coming from these firms. While about 20 firms offering roles in the consulting space recruited 29 percent of the batch, the Banking and Financial services sector saw 27 percent of the batch joining the workforce. However, there was no dearth of opportunities for students interested in other sectors. 15 percent of the batch took up roles with marketing majors such as P&G, HUL, Nestle, Airtel, J&J, Nokia, Philips, Titan, Cadbury etc.

Similarly, 13 percent of the batch took up roles with firms operating in the systems domain with some of the star recruiters being Google, Inc. which offered Sales, Marketing, Account Management and Business Development roles, Microsoft, Amazon, Cognizant, Wipro, Mindtree and Rediff.
