Johannesburg, May 17 (IANS) Indian politics took a backseat to Bollywood in the biggest South African weekly, the Sunday Times, with photographs of film stars participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) gala finale hogging page three, while the Congress party win at the general elections got only two short columns on page 15.

Campaigns to goad voters to start afresh in Bangalore

Bangalore, May 17 (IANS) So what if Bangalore’s voters showed least enthusiasm to vote in the Lok Sabha polls, despite the city seeing a large number of campaigns goading people to vote? As the 2009 verdict is out, campaigns in Bangalore are all set to start afresh for the year 2013 right now.

“We’re now targeting the assembly election of Karnataka set for 2013 and 16th Lok Sabha election of 2014. For the 15th Lok Sabha polls, we started the countrywide campaign only six months back. So we did not receive much success. But we’re sure our long and steady campaign for next five years will surely make a huge difference,” Vandana Krishnan of Janaagraha, a Bangalore-based NGO, told IANS.

Mani Shankar Aiyar fails to retain Mayiladuthurai

Chennai, May 16 (IANS) Lady luck did not smile on Panchayati Raj Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar of the Congress as he failed to retain the Mayiladuthurai Lok Sabha seat in Tamil Nadu for a third consecutive term, and fourth overall, losing to the AIADMK’s O.S. Maniyan by 36,000 votes.

For Maniyan it was sweet revenge as he had lost to Aiyar in 2004 by a huge margin.

Spears shelled out $450,000 for security

London, May 16 (IANS) Pop diva Britney Spears refuses to take any risks when it comes to her safety, as she’s splashed out almost $450,000 (300,000 pounds) on her security.

Court documents filed May 15 by Spears’ attorneys show the singer paid $447,633 (298,422 pounds) to make sure she was well protected between March and December last year, reports contactmusic.com.
