Eight states account for 193 million poor

New Delhi, Aug 19 (IANS) Eight states account for 193.8 million poor people out of the national total of 301.7 million, the Rajya Sabha was informed Thursday.

Minister of State for Planning V. Narayanasamy identified the states as Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.

Microsoft to strengthen cyber security in UAE

Abu Dhabi, Aug 19 (IANS/WAM) Microsoft Inc. will work towards strengthening the security of information systems and networks in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

aeCERT, the telecommunications regulatory authority in the Gulf signed an agreement with Microsoft Gulf to promote its Security Cooperation Programme (SCP), which would help enable secure computing environments in government offices as well as of common citizens.

Low income households falling in India

New Delhi, Aug 19 (IANS) The number of low income households in India is falling, parliament was informed Thursday.

Minister of State for Planning V. Narayanasamy said this emerged from a book published by the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) called “How India Earns, Spends and Saves”.

Over a third of India is poor, says government

New Delhi, Aug 19 (IANS) More than a third of India, or 37.2 percent of the population, has been classified as poor, Minister of State for Planning V. Narayanasamy said Thursday.

Answering a question from Gyan Prakash Pilania in the Rajya Sabha, the minister said the Planning Commission had accepted that 41.8 percent of the rural and 25.7 percent of the urban populations were poor.

New satellite images reveal how world’s mangrove forests have declined

Washington, Aug 19 (ANI): Scientists have got the most comprehensive and exact data on the distribution and decline of mangrove forests from across the world, all thanks to new satellite imagery.
The research, carried out by scientists from the U.S Geological Survey and NASA, and reveals forest distribution is 12.3 percent smaller than earlier estimates.

Egypt voted best destination by travel writers

Gurgaon, Aug 19 (IANS) Egypt has been voted the “perfect holiday destination” by the Pacific Area Travel Writer’s Association (PATWA) and tourism publication Safari India at a tourism conclave here.

Director of Egyptian Tourism Office in India, Adel El Masary, was Wednesday evening honoured with a prize for the best tourism director from overseas while Egypt was described by Safari India as the “right mix of entertainment, leisure, business” preferred by the globe-trotting businessperson and the corporate Indian traveller.
